Sculptor, painter and brother of artist Antoine Pevsner, Gabo was born Naum Pevsner in Briansk, Russia. He trained in Munich as an engineer, and new scientific concepts of space, time and matter inspired him to create sculptures using cardboard, plywood and transparent plastic. In 1920 he published with his brother a ‘Realistic Manifesto’, which rejected Cubism and Futurism, and set out the principles of Constructivism. From 1936 Gabo lived in England, influencing Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, particularly in the use of string.
