Aristarkh Lentulov
1878-1943

Born in Penza, deep in the Russian Provinces to the family of a local priest, Lentulov studied art from the age of 15 locally before moving to Kiev and studying at the Academy of Arts from 1901. Sacked for lack of attendance at class in 1905, Lentulov returned home before failing to gain entry into the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg but the move put him in touch with all the leading Futurists and, gradually, Lentulov found his own voice. In 1910 he organised, together with Konchalovsky and Mashkov, the first Knave of Diamonds exhibition. This group that featured work by Larionov, Goncharova, Malevich, Le Fauconnier, Kandinsky, Yawlensky, Munter and others caused a scandal as, indeed, did many of the other exhibitions of the Russian Avant Garde in which Lentulov took part. >> Read more
